In Loving Memory of Michael Joseph Jackson

So today makes three years since Michael Jackson passed away. To be honest I wasn’t expecting the attention to die down so quickly. Two years ago on this same day I could jump out of bed and turn on ANY radio station and hear Michael Jackson all day long. Or I could turn on any music tv channel whether it be MTV, MTV Hits , VH1 Soul, etc, and see a Michael Jackson music videos, or Michael Jackson interviews or tv specials playing all day long. Now this morning I had to bypass most radio stations and go straight to the classic R&B station to hear some MJ. And even then it’s not like they were playing him all day. They would just play a Michael Jackson song here or there and go back to their regular playlists.

In 2009, and 2010 Spike Lee hosted the Brooklyn Loves Michael Jackson event in Prospect Park. I had a blast both years. It would’ve happened in 2011 but it got cancelled because of hurricane Irene. I’ve been googling it for a the past few days and there’s no sign of it going down in 2012.

I didn’t even bother with MTV or MTV Hits today. Thankfully VH1 was playing a Michael Jackson video playlist. But that was pretty much it. Now if I want to hear Michael Jackson all day it would have to be via Pandora Radio (which I’m doing right now as I type fyi). I always understood that there would come a day when Michael Jackson’s death wouldn’t matter to people as much. I just didn’t expect it to happen to so soon.

Tupac died 15 (about to be 16) years ago and there’s no need to make a big deal about the anniversary of his death because they still play him on the radio so much it’s like he never died. Biggie died 15 years ago and they still make a big deal about the anniversary of his death. Then again I do live in Brooklyn so of course I’m going to see a lot of love for Biggie. I wouldn’t have any idea how it goes outside of NY. Aaliyah died 10 (about to be 11) years ago and people still make a big deal about the anniversary of her death. I don’t understand why after only three years it seems like people have forgotten about the king of pop.

But anyway with that said I just wanted to let the world know I didn’t forget. Below are some of my favorite Michael Jackson moments. RIP MJ.

MJ the Mic Hog

This was a funny Michael Jackson moment. This is actually footage from a Diana Ross concert and she asks Michael to join her on stage and dude totally jacks the mic from here and doesn’t give it back. Hilarious!

1995 MTV VMAs
Mike was 37 when he did this performance and he still killed it!

and last by not least…..

Motown 25

No it’s not just the Billie Jean performance it’s the whole thing. The whole performance was good.

Seriously Tho…They Gotta Be Recycling

Ladies….have you ever noticed that there at least 10 (and I mean at the very least) tips on how to please a man in bed in every issue of Cosmo magazine? I’m all for sexual exploration and trying new things and all…but really? Are there really THAT many ways to please a man in bed?

I did a little research. Cosmopolitan started out as a family magazine (how ironic) in 1886. The magazine has been bought and sold about a million times over the years. The woman’s magazine (with all the sex tips and such) that we know today came about in the early 1970s.

So let’s do some math about 10 sex tips (and i’m really low balling here) every month since 1970? It’s 2012…so that’s makes something like 5,040 ways to please a man in bed.

I guess to some that may not seem so far-fetched but if you ask me I say they had to have been recycling tips. There’s only so many creative things you can think up before you’re just thinking of different variations of the same thing. Am I right?

Random Thoughts on the Addidas Shackle Sneakers

So everyone is all up in arms about these orange and blue Addidas sneakers designed by Jeremy Scott.  The controversy is that these shoes resemble foot shackles that were once used to bind slaves being transported from one place to another.

I see exactly what people (black people specifically) are upset about.  They definitely do resemble slave shackles.  However I do see how the resemblance could’ve been unintentional.  According to CBS the shoes were inspired by a children’s toy called My Pet Monster.

As you can see the toy monster has the same color scheme as the controversial sneakers.  It’s definitely feasible that Jeremy Scott drew inspiration from this toy.  Also seeing as sneakers are so popular among the African American community it would seem like a terrible business idea to offend them intentionally.  On the other hand this wouldn’t be the first time a big name offended the African American community. Who remembers the whole Cristal not wanting to be associated with rap music fiasco?

To be honest I don’t know what to make of these sneakers.  On one hand I argue that one can’t expect anyone who isn’t African American to understand fully how an African American would see things.  Perception is everything in situations like these.  Two people could be looking at the exact same thing but have two completely different interpretations on what they’re looking at.  I’m pretty sure there are plenty people that would look at those sneakers and think about My Pet Monster.  Since slavery wasn’t their struggle shackles wouldn’t be the first thing to pop up in their minds.

On the other hand I could argue that both the shoes AND the toy are offensive.  Yes I know the toy is blue but it’s still a dark shade of blue with black hands and feet with a huge nose and a huge smile sort of reminiscent of black face.

Also of course it’s wearing the controversial shackles.  Let’s not forget slave shackles weren’t only worn on the feet. And let’s not forget that there was once a time where African American’s were seen as sub human, lacking intelligence, and prone to savage behavior (you know…like monsters).  Also they were bought, sold, and owned (you know…like pets).  It doesn’t stop there. I could go on and on.

This could either be a complete coincidence or a subtle reminder that racism is still alive and well.  I’m not sure which stance to take.  What do you think?

Shia LaBeouf Naked

Anyone who knows me knows I have a huge crush on actor Shia LaBeouf.  Imagine how excited I was (no pun intended) when I read on Huffington Post that he was featured in a video in which he did full frontal nudity.  Oh My.  Of course the point of the video isn’t to show Shia LaBeouf naked.  According to the article it’s a depiction of a couple in a never ending cycle of desire and addiction.  Check it out.

Drake & J.Cole Club Paradise Concert

Hey there peoples!

Want to know what I did this weekend? I went to the Nikon Theater at Jones Beach to see the Club Paradise Concert!

Cool right? So I got there at around 6:30pm. The show wasn’t scheduled to start until 7 so I had plenty of time to take in the scenery.

I’m a big fan of beaches and water as well as music and concerts so I have to say being at a concert right by the water was GREAT for me.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that not only did the concert start on time…it actually started early! 2 Chains was first to perform and he went on at 6:50 on the dot.

The crowd definitely loved this guy. Next up was Meek Mill.

After that was Waka Flocka Flame. From this point on everyone would have some type of live instrument on the stage. I thought that was cool. Waka Flocka had crazy energy. He even ran into the crowd at some point. Unfortunately, I didn’t get pics of that though.

Now don’t get me wrong the other opening acts were cool but this is the part where they got to the acts I REALLY came to see. I looooovvvvess me some JCole! I got super excited when I saw this little sign on the stage.

The sun was beginning to set when J.Cole took the stage. He performed all of my favorites like, Workout, In the Morning, and Can’t Get Enough. I was little disappointed he didn’t do Mr Nice Watch though.

Here’s some video of J.Cole performing In the Morning.

Finally after the sun had completely set is was time for the headliner to take the stage. Yup, you guessed it….none other than Mr Aubrey Drake Graham…better known as Drake.

Unfortunately I couldn’t get a really good shot of him because this guy just don’t not stay still at all. That’s definitely a good thing of course. He definitely puts a lot of energy in his performances. He definitely didn’t come alone either. All of the opening acts (except for J.Cole) made cameo appearances during Drake’s performance. But he didn’t stop with the other rappers that were on the bill to perform. He brought out a lot of surprise guests as well such as, French Montana, The Weeknd, Busta Rhymes, Juelz Santana, Cam’ron, Jim Jones, and dancehall artist Mavado. I love that he took some time out during the show just to show his fans some special attention. I was overall entertained though I do think he overdid it on the guest appearances. There were some hits he left out of his set (i.e. Best I Ever Had and Find Your Love) that he probably would have had time to perform if he didn’t have so many guests. But over all I definitely had a good night at the Club Paradise Concert. Here’s some more video.

So What’s All The Hoopla About?

I was watching a talk show one morning as I was getting ready for work. They were talking about the latest craze to hit romance/erotica readers everywhere….the Fifty Shades of Grey triolgy. I tried to get into it but honestly I’m not that into romance or erotica myself. I’m more of a sci fi kind of chick. I only made it about halfway through the book before giving it up. I couldn’t help but wonder to myself what was all the hype about? But let’s get back to that later.

This talkshow was discussing how reading Fifty Shades of Grey has inspired married couples and people in long term relationships to get a little freakier in the bedroom. Apparently the sex toy industry has been booming since this book hit the market. Now before I continue about the talk show let me give a little background info on the basic premise of Fifty Shades of Grey for those who don’t already know.  It’s basically about this suave super rich guy who seduces a young college grad and introduces her to a whole world of kinky sex. They somehow manage to fall in love with each other in the process.

Keeping this in mind, the thing I really noticed about the people on the talk show though is that most of them had been married for many years and were probably bored to death with their marriages. It just seems like they were craving some good excitement. I couldn’t help but wonder if this is a huge part of why this book is so popular. Are people just bored in their relationships, or generally unsatisfied with their love lives and living vicariously through Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey? What do you think?
